Resources and Links

NCAFE receives occasional e-mails from our membership regarding difficult situations in the workplace. Although we do not have the resources or the mandate to advocate on behalf of individuals, we would like to offer our support by pointing you in the right direction. In communicating with us and with fellow public servants, we ask that you follow the Code of Values and Ethics regarding communications in a respectful workplace. The principles of appreciative inquiry and constructive feedback can ensure that attention is focused on priorities, goals, and efforts, rather than being compromised through miscommunication.

Below you will find links and small descriptions of different resources that may assist you, the NCAFE membership, in facing various challenges in the workplace.

In an effort to offer as much support as possible, please submit other ideas that might assist members.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) is a non-adversarial way of resolving disputes that is being increasingly used in the public and private sectors. The Government of Canada recognized the value of ADR in its Public Service Modernization Act.

Employee Assistance Program

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a service offered to most government departments. EAP offers counselling, advisory services, crisis management and information. They have a 24-hour line at 1-800-268-7708. Though some departments may not be covered under this agreement, they can provide references to other resources.

Employment Equity Information

There are various Employment Equity Groups throughout the Federal Public Service. Many departments also have Employment Equity Advisory Groups, and/or Employee Networks these can often be found through your department's Employment Equity Coordinator. If you're unsure of how to do this, a good place for more information is the Canada Public Service Agency's Employment Equity and Diversity Section.

If your department or agency has an Advisory Committee/Group, or an Employee Network that you would like to post, please submit the link and/or contact information so that it can be included on this page.

Environmental and Workplace Health

The environment, including the workplace, has an important impact on a person's health. Health Canada works to protect the health of Canadians from environmental risks.

General Information for Public Service Employees

This site provides quick access to general information for federal employees such as collective bargaining units, benefits, leave entitlements, travel, disability, official languages, and more.

Ombudsman

An ombudsman is an independent, objective investigator of people's complaints against government agencies and other organizations, both public and private sectors. After a fair, thorough review, the ombudsman decides if the complaint is justified and makes recommendations to the organization in order to resolve the problem.

Unions

This link will help you to identify which Union represents you with which Collective Agreement, based on your classification. Collective Agreements highlight the rights that your union has negotiated on your behalf. Unions can be approached to provide confidential advice on various work-related, rights and equality issues.
